Astronauts perform a variety of tasks, including scientific research, spacewalks, and maintaining the International Space Station (ISS).
Scientific research
- Conduct experiments in microgravity to study physics, biology, and medicine
- Collect data to help understand space and its effects on the human body
Spacewalks
- Perform maintenance tasks on the spacecraft, such as repairing equipment or testing new technologies
- Assist in the construction and maintenance of space stations
ISS maintenance Check and maintain equipment, Clean air filters, Update computer equipment, and Prepare for emergency repairs.
Piloting
- Pilot the spacecraft to dock with the ISS or navigate lunar orbit
Communication
- Communicate with ground teams to update them on mission progress and relay important data
Physical fitness
- Exercise to maintain muscle and bone strength
Teamwork
- Work closely with mission control centers to execute mission objectives
- Work as part of a team with astronauts from other countries
Astronauts must be trained in the use of specialized spacesuits and equipment.
